The current City Sign Ordinance does not restrict signs to weekends only. For example each residentially zone parcel may have up to 10 square feet of signs on the parcel, with no individual sign over 6 square feet. The signs must also be located behind the public right-of-way.

This, however, may change in the future, as City Council is currently reviewing the sign ordinance for possible amendment.

It is noted that the most current changes to the ordinance are not yet appearing in the Unified Development Code that is available online. The City is contacting the third party vendor with which we contract to get this addressed.

Can you please post the complete city code sections dealing with these trash signs here? They are really a blight on our city. Also, if signs must be placed behind the public right-of-way, then that means that they are generally on private property. If someone places signs on private land without permission, aren't they then technically guilty of trespassing and placing trash on private property?

Please note, however, that the aforementioned amendment does modify some sections of this document.

I reviewed Section 2.6 of the UDC, including the recent amendments that you cited and the new text clearly states that “1. Weekend signs shall be permitted between 12:01 a.m. on Thursday and 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. No weekend sign may be placed for a period longer than ninety-six (96) hours.” It seems that you are saying that these real estate signs are no longer covered under the definition of "weekend signs", because the definition under the recently revised code is basically meaningless. I would agree with that, since the Code, post amendment, seems to have been carved out as a sop to real estate developers that contribute to city officials' campaign funds. However, that means that unless the signs have a permit, which I am sure these signs do not have, then under Section 2.6.7 they must be "Non-illuminated free-standing signs having an aggregate sign area of not more than 12 sq. ft., provided that no single sign shall exceed 4 ft. in height, have an area greater than 6 sq. ft., or be set back less than 10 ft. from the public right-of-way." These signs are not set back 10 feet from the public right away and can be removed on that basis.

I read the regulations and amendments, but no one has yet explained what signs are included in "weekend signs". Without this explanation, it seems that no ordinances can be enforced, and Home For Sale signs may be posted at will, as long as they are 10 ft. from the right of way. My observation seems to have just been glossed over in favor of the real estate industry. Since my question seems not likely to be explained, this item may as well be closed.
